Sabine and the house at Fagrafelli

My name is Sabine de Bourmont. I am French. I first came to Iceland more than 25 years ago and did not really leave it. In 2011 we built this house on a hill in the Goðafoss valley and named it Fagrafell — in Icelandic fagra is beautiful and fell is a hill. I have hosted here from May to October ever since.

The house is small on purpose: four rooms with private bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, an outdoor grill, five bicycles, parking on the hill. Fourteen guests and, when a group asks, two extra beds for guides. From the kitchen you see the mist of the waterfall, 4 km away. That view is why people stay two nights.

I speak English, French, Italian, Spanish and German — and I get by in Icelandic with neighbours and the horse farm. The official email is 2013.fagrafell@gmail.com. The phone is +33 6 28 26 17 94. Pets are on request only; write before you book. There is no breakfast: you cook, or you grill.

A day here is simple. Guests arrive between 17:00 and 22:00. I show the kitchen, the grill, the road to the west bank. In the morning they leave for Húsavík, Mývatn or Dettifoss; I stay with the house. In the evening they come back with wet coats and a bag of food from Akureyri. That rhythm has not changed since 2011. The name on the door is still Fagrafell. The email is still 2013.fagrafell@gmail.com.
